Executive From Amazon Criticizes Some Music Industry Sentiment

In a leaked email from former Amazon senior manager of digital music Scott Ambrose Reilly that has recently made its way into the hands of media outlets, the executive expresses distaste with both his former company and other colleagues in the music industry for what he views as a decidedly negative approach to digital music sales. The parting letter was intended to be a final shot at those in the music industry and online retail world who have curtailed Reilly’s efforts to revolutionize the way that consumers obtain music over the web. During his work at Amazon, the exec handled operations of content delivery, music industry deals and the maintaining of relationships with record labels around the world. Upon his departure from the digital music division, Reilly will shift to developing business plans for the periodicals section of Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader. Prior to his senior managing role, he worked for a subscription based music service that operated over the web called eMusic.
Amazon has been noted for DRM (Digital Rights Management) free music sales that many consumers applaud versus the offerings from Apple’s iTunes which can make tracks difficult to transfer from one device to another. Under Reilly’s encouragement, Amazon eventually worked up to nearly 12 million DRM free tracks in its retail offerings.
