In the world of patent law, suing is a common way of handling disputes, but things do not normally reach this level. Paul Allen, the billionaire tech mogul who was part of the founding of Microsoft, Inc. with Bill Gates has now sued both Apple, Inc. and Google, Inc. along with nine other companies. Allen’s suit states that the companies are making use of technology developed around 10 years ago at his lab in the Silicon Valley area of California. While Allen did not develop the tech advances himself, he does hold claim to the patents and is now taking the companies to task in aggressive fashion, among them some of the most well known names in the tech industry because he claims they are using patented technology from his lab, Interval Research Corp. While litigation over patent disputes is presently on the rise, both the United States Congress and courts are attempting to keep it under control in an effort to avoid a similar situation seen in the early 1900’s during the time of Thomas Edison and other star inventors who viciously defended their patents and tied up courts.
Aside from names like Apple and Google, Allen is also pursuing eBay, Netflix, AOL and Facebook. Four patents are among the key parts of the suit and are said to be primary components of the companies named in the lawsuit which does not set a dollar amount on the damages. Older Web Users Using Social Networking Sites in Record Numbers
October 21st, 2010 admin The dynamics of the social population using the web today is changing in a big and potentially very important way according to analysts of web demographics. Changes are taking place in the age and time usage of the web, in particular when it comes to social networking sites. Sources such as the Per Internet and American Life Project are showing that users of sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are getting older, with the base of users over the age of 50 now on the rise, a segment that has in the past been slow to adopt such tech advances for social interaction. Nearly half of all users of the web between the ages of 50 and 64, as well as a quarter of those over 65, now use social networking sites. This is a massive change from 2009 when the figures were only half this for social networking site participation. Usage of Twitter alone, for users over the age of 65, has gone from 1% to 6% in a single year, a change that analysts say is tremendous compared to how slow to adapt new technology this social group has tended to be in the past. Some say the ease of interaction and increasingly familiarity with such software interfaces may be playing a role in these changes.
